TODDLER BITING
Occasionally a toddler may reach a developmental stage in which biting
another child is a way of expressing his or her emotions. Some toddlers
bite for the following reasons:
1. Teething
2. Sensory Exploration
3. Cause and Effect
4. Mimicking
5. Self Assertion
When biting occurs, we will:
* Attend to the child who was bitten, administering first aid according
to the severity of the bite.
* Discipline the biter by teaching them what empathy is as well as
“biting hurts!”
* Inform both families of the incident either by writing or through
placing a phone call
* For confidentiality purposes, the children involved in the incident
will not be named.
* Seek assistance from the biter’s parents to ensure there is
consistency in our behavior management.
A child who is exhibiting age appropriate biting and whose family is
fully cooperating will not be asked to leave Kids’ Kingdom. If a child
is exhibiting chronic biting with no improvement and Kids’ Kingdom has
tried all of its know approaches and conferred with the parents, it may
be that the child is not well suited for Kids’ Kingdom at this time,
upon which the family may be asked to end their enrollment .
